SATANIC RITUAL ABUSE, RECOVERED MEMORIES, PAST LIFE REGRESSION, AND RIDES IN FLYING SAUCERSby: Kenneth R. Pangborn As most of us studied history as we were growing up, we read of past eras when people had some strange beliefs. Superstitions and generally misconceived ideas of the universe around them. For a time the known world believed ardently that the sun revolved around the world. Humans worshipped all sorts of strange things that were beyond their understanding. I am sure that some future historian will look back at the close of the 20th century and have a chuckle or two over the ideas some folks hold to today about Satanic Ritual child abuse, past lives regression therapy, recovered memories an UFO abductions. They will wonder how people could ever be so foolish as to believe in such nonsense. Are there people who worship Satan? Certainly there are! Do some of these people commit horrendous crimes in the name of their religion? I am sure that in a world with nearly 7 billion people you can find examples of almost any aberration you can think of. The issue is one of a question of just how common the practice might be, namely sexually abusing children in Satanic rituals, and murdering infants as part of some ceremony. If we look at the material available from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, we can see that it is nowhere near as common as the media and a few hysterics would have us believe. Wrapped around the issue of Satanic Ritual Abuse comes other issues, namely and centrally the issue of "Recovered Memories" of abuse. Almost always when we hear of Satanic Ritual Abuse it is through the process of "Recovered Memory Therapy" and when we hear of "Recovered Memories" it almost always deals with alleged Satanic Ritual Abuse. One finds themselves asking which came first, the chicken or the egg. It isn't easy to ferret out the answer. We seem to walk away with eyes tearing up. Of course the process that the "therapists" (almost always social workers) use to assist people in the "recovery" of these "memories" is almost exclusively confined to the use of substantial amounts of potent mind-altering drugs (sodium amytal, sodium pentathol) or via a process of hypnosis. The Psychological and Psychiatric communities are split on the validity of such procedures with the overwhelming majority condemning it as a voodoo practice. What makes this entire process potentially amusing for our future historian or archeologist is that the same "therapeutic mechanism" used to assist people remember being used in Satanic Ritual Sexual Abuse is the same process used to assist people to remember being Napoleon in a past life. As I type this, by best estimates there are 23,497 people in the United States alone that remember being Napoleon in a past life. And this is the same process used to help people recall bizarre sexual experimentation performed on them by Aliens in flying saucers that abducted them. At about the time the future historian gets to the parts about 23,000 Napoleons and people believing they were snatched up in Flying Saucers by little gray men they will be rolling on the floor knowing that our society gave credence to this nonsense and actually believed it. This issue says a very great deal about the gullibility of people as individuals and a society as a whole. And it goes a long way to prove that mass hysteria is a problem we have yet failed to deal with effectively. Belief in these things by media and ultimately by society as a whole is very concerning. Because just like Spain during the Inquisition and Massachusetts during the witch trials, reason seems to have left our culture behind. Does this mean that I am suggesting that evil things don't happen? Of course not! It does mean that I am saying that we need to concentrate on the crimes and not the emotional hysteria. The subject, however, is not funny to people wrongly accused of Satanic Ritual abuse. Finding a defense team that understands the problems associated with defending a person accused of satanic abuse is a problem for most people. Lots of lawyers will say that they can defend the cases. Being able to keep that promise is another issue. There are sites on the web that are from the hysterical point of view. There are books on the subject. One accuses all sorts of celebrities of pedophilia and satanic behavior. The authors who write such potboilers have little conscience of whom they would destroy. A good source to study on this would be the cases currently unraveling in Wenatchee, Washington. There was a glut of convictions. Now, in a calmer moment we see case after case being reversed as the so-called evidence in viewed in a brighter light. If it seems that I am subjecting these issues to a healthy dose of ridicule, that is only because I am subjecting it to the treatment it so richly deserves. Everyone knows children are abused. And that many adults do evil things. But when you see demons everywhere, that is a sign of mental illness. The lynch mob mentality does not serve the purpose of truth at all.
